Backwards Induction versus Forward Induction Reasoning

چکیده

In this paper we want to shed some further light on what we mean by backwards induction and forward induction reasoning in dynamic games. To that purpose, we take the concepts of common belief in future rationality (Perea (2010)) and extensive form rationalizability (Pearce (1984), Battigalli (1997), Battigalli and Siniscalchi (2002)) as possible representatives for backwards induction and forward induction reasoning. We compare both concepts on an epistemic and an algorithm level, thereby highlighting some of the crucial di¤erences between backwards and forward induction reasoning in dynamic games. Kew words and phrases: Epistemic game theory, backwards induction, forward induction, algorithms. Backwards Forward Induction

In this paper we isolate a particular refinement of the notion of Nash equilibrium that is characterized by (i) the fact that it provides a unified framework for both backwards and forward induction; and (ii) by the fact that it is mechanically computable. We provide an effective procedure, whose definition embodies certain given principles of rationality. Such a procedure allows us, given a re...

Forward induction

In this paper we isolate a particular refinement of the notion of Nash equilibrium that is characterized by two properties: (i) it provides a unified framework for both backwards and forward induction; and (it) it is mechanically computable. We provide an effective procedure that allows players, given the extensive-form representation of a game, to compute a set of "reasonable paths" through th...

A New Acceptance Sampling Design Using Bayesian Modeling and Backwards Induction

In acceptance sampling plans, the decisions on either accepting or rejecting a specific batch is still a challenging problem. In order to provide a desired level of protection for customers as well as manufacturers, in this paper, a new acceptance sampling design is proposed to accept or reject a batch based on Bayesian modeling to update the distribution function of the percentage of nonconfor...

Backward Induction or Forward Reasoning? - an Experiment of stochastic Alternating offer bargaining

Bounded rationality questions backward induction, which however, does not exclude such reasoning when anticipation is easy. In our stochastic (alternating offer) bargaining experiment, there is a certain first-period pie and a known finite deadline. What is uncertain (except for the final period) is whether there is a further period. Whereas backward induction requires information about all lat...
